BLM heat and navigation alert for Painted Canyon and Mecca Hills: these areas have little to no cell service and no designated trails. Download your map before arriving, bring plenty of water — at least one liter per person — plus electrolytes, start early because temperatures rise quickly by early afternoon, hike with a buddy, and tell someone when you expect back. source
Seasonal fire restrictions run April 15 through October 29, 2026 across the BLM California Desert District, which includes Riverside County. Under them, campfires are limited to approved fire pits at developed recreation sites — which Painted Canyon is not — while portable stoves and lanterns with shut-off valves stay legal with a permit. Plan on cooking over a stove, not a fire. BLM has lifted the order early in past years, so check before you go. source
Mecca Hills has been inside Chuckwalla National Monument since January 14, 2025. The monument is being challenged in court — in March 2026 a judge let nine conservation groups and several Tribal Nations join the case to defend it — but nothing about day-to-day access has changed. source
At Salton Sea State Recreation Area, Mecca Beach Campground is closed for maintenance, Bombay Beach Campground is closed, and Varner Harbor is closed to vessel access until further notice as the water level drops. The visitor center and shoreline day use are open. source

Why go

Mecca Hills is 26,242 acres of badlands maze wrinkled up by the San Andreas Fault, an hour past Palm Springs and fifteen miles southeast of Indio. BLM describes it plainly: a labyrinth of small, narrow, steep canyons cut into layers of eroded rock, some of it over 600 million years old, with sandy washes full of ironwood, smoke trees and paloverde.

The reason people come is Painted Canyon. A dirt road runs four miles up a wash into striped red, ochre and gray walls and stops at a parking area. From there a slot called Ladder Canyon climbs through cracks barely wider than your shoulders, using wooden ladders bolted into dry waterfalls, then pops out on a ridge with the Salton Sea laid out below and drops back down the wide floor of Big Painted Canyon.

It is free, it is unmanaged, and it is close: there are no designated trails, no water, no ranger, and little to no cell service.

The classic season and the busiest. March and April are close to perfect for the canyons — warm afternoons, cool mornings, almost no rain. By mid-May the valley is already at 95°F and the canyon floor holds heat long after the sun leaves it. Wildflowers follow a wet winter and are never a given.

Don't. July normals at nearby Thermal are 107°F by day and 76°F at night, there is no shade in the washes, no water anywhere, and no cell service to call for help. Late-summer thunderstorms also put water into slot canyons. If you go at all, it is a sunrise drive-and-look, not a hike.

The season swings hard. September still averages 101°F and behaves like summer; by November the valley is at 79°F with 45°F nights, which is ideal. October is the crossover — 90°F afternoons and 57°F dawns — so hike early or late and let the middle of the day go. Seasonal fire restrictions usually run into late October.

Shirtsleeves at noon, near freezing before dawn, and the lowest sun of the year raking across the canyon walls. The one catch is rain: winter is the wettest time here, and this is a place where rain closes the dirt road and puts water through the slots. Watch the forecast and stay out if anything is coming.

Ladder Canyon

The reason to come. A narrow crack off the main wash climbs through conglomerate walls that close to shoulder width overhead, and where the canyon hits a dry waterfall, a wooden ladder gets you up it — several of them, the tallest around twelve to fifteen feet. It is the rare desert hike that feels like an obstacle course and needs no rope, no permit and no skill beyond a steady foot. Recreation.gov describes Painted Canyon as a moderate hike of up to five miles round trip; secondary trail guides put the full loop at 4.5 to 5 miles.

The slot entrance is an unmarked crack on the left of the main wash — easy to walk straight past.
Climb Ladder Canyon and come down Big Painted Canyon, not the other way.
Test every ladder before you weight it; nobody maintains them and rungs go missing.
Go last thing in the day: the walls glow and the sand has stopped radiating heat.

Painted Canyon and the road in

The drive is half the experience. Painted Canyon Road leaves Box Canyon Road and runs north up a sandy wash, and within a mile the banks rise into striped walls of red, ochre, gray and green — the eroded layers BLM calls some of the most unusual formations of their kind in the world, tilted up by the San Andreas Fault. It ends at a dirt parking area under the canyon walls. This corridor is also where everyone camps: it is outside the wilderness boundary, so vehicles are allowed on the roadbed.

The first couple of miles cross tribal land — carry on up to the BLM part before camping.
Soft sand, not steepness, is what strands cars; keep moving and do not stop in the deep stuff.

Drive it slowly on the way in — the best walls are the ones you pass at 10 mph.

Big Painted Canyon

The wide, sand-floored canyon that the loop comes back down, and a fine destination on its own. The walls are the most colorful in the range — bands of rust, cream and slate folded at angles that make the geology obvious to a nine-year-old. Short side canyons branch off it, one reached by its own ladder, and they are usually empty even when the slot is busy. Because it needs no climbing, this is the version of Painted Canyon you can walk with small kids, or in flip-flops you will regret.

Good to know

Walk up it as far as it stays interesting, then turn around — there is no summit to bag.
Duck into the side canyons; they are where the group ahead of you is not.
Sandy footing all the way, so it eats more energy than the distance suggests.
If a storm is anywhere in the region, stay out of the narrow parts.

Season note: This is the no-ladders option if the slot looks beyond someone in the group

Accessibility: Firm-to-soft sand, no steps and no exposure for the first stretch; strollers will not roll in it.

The ridge above Ladder Canyon

The slot spits you out of the dark onto an open ridge, and the whole thing opens at once: the Salton Sea flat and silver to the southwest, San Jacinto and San Gorgonio standing over the far end of the valley, and the Mecca Hills badlands folded in every direction below you. It is the payoff of the loop and the one place on the route with a horizon. USGS elevation around the ridge runs roughly 860 to 965 feet — three to four hundred feet above the parking area.

This is the photo everyone comes back with — time it for the last light.
Sit down for ten minutes here; it is the only place on the loop with a breeze and a view.
Keep the group together: the descent into Big Painted Canyon is not obvious from up top.
Carry a headlamp even on an afternoon walk — twilight is short and the canyon below goes dark first.

Salton Sea State Recreation Area

California's largest lake, sitting in a basin about 220 feet below sea level, with the Chocolate Mountains behind it and one of the busiest bird shorelines on the Pacific Flyway. It is also a place in visible decline — the water is shrinking and saltier every year, Varner Harbor is closed to boats, and the beach is made of pulverized barnacle shell. Strange, enormous and worth an hour on the way in or out. Day use is $7 per vehicle, $5 for seniors 62 and over.

Best time: Early morning, for the birds and the light

Good to know

Go to the visitor center first — the staff will tell you what is closed this month.
Mecca Beach Campground and Bombay Beach Campground are both closed right now.
Best light and most birds are in the first two hours after sunrise.
It can smell strongly of sulfur on a still, warm day. That is normal, not an emergency.

Box Canyon Road

The paved road that gets you to Painted Canyon is a destination in its own right. It threads a narrow, walled canyon through the southern Mecca Hills — the non-wilderness corridor BLM says splits off the section holding Sheep Hole Oasis and Hidden Springs Canyon — and climbs steadily to Joshua Tree's south entrance at I-10. It was once US 60 and US 70, the main road east out of Los Angeles, before the freeway went elsewhere and the state gave it up.

Drive it eastbound on the way home to link Painted Canyon with Joshua Tree's south end.
Pull-outs are informal; use them only where the shoulder is firm and you are visible.
Signs say Box Canyon Road — BLM's old reference to State Highway 195 no longer matches reality.
Do not drive it when rain is falling in the hills above it.

Season note: Storms have closed it before — a 2018 washout took a $3 million repair and reopened in May 2019

Cottonwood Spring, Joshua Tree

Joshua Tree's south entrance is the closest national park gate to camp, and Cottonwood Spring is right behind it: a fan-palm and cottonwood oasis a short walk down a dirt path from the parking area, fed by a spring the Cahuilla used and prospectors later fought over. It is also the trailhead for the Mastodon Peak loop and the longer walk out to Lost Palms Oasis. Entry is $30 per vehicle for seven days, and the entrance stations take cards only.

Good to know

Pair it with driving home the back way on Box Canyon Road — it is right at that end.
The Cottonwood Visitor Center has water and flush toilets, which camp does not.
The oasis itself is a ten-minute walk; Mastodon Peak makes it a real morning.

Season note: At about 3,000 ft it runs 10–15°F cooler than the canyon floor

Coachella Valley Preserve

An 880-acre preserve in the Indio Hills where the San Andreas Fault forces groundwater to the surface and a grove of California fan palms grows out of the open desert. The boardwalk and sand paths of the McCallum Trail lead to a palm-shaded pool that looks imported from somewhere much wetter. It protects the Coachella Valley fringe-toed lizard, desert pupfish and Coachella Valley milkvetch. Free to enter, donations welcome — and open on a Sunday morning, which is the point.

Dos Palmas Preserve

A 1,400-acre BLM Area of Critical Environmental Concern where springs feed real wetlands and groves of California fan palms a few minutes from the Salton Sea. It is flat, shaded in places, and quiet — the opposite of the slot canyon — and the parking lot has the first flush restrooms since Indio.

The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens

Giraffes, cheetahs, bighorn sheep and a model-train village spread across gardens of the world’s deserts — the easy, shaded, bathroom-equipped counterpoint to a night in the wash, and the kids’ favorite way to end the weekend.

A real hike with scrambling and no official trail; the main grotto has reportedly collapsed, so treat it as an expedition for another trip, not a Sunday-morning add-on. Sheep Hole Oasis and Hidden Springs Canyon — BLM names both as the reliable water sources in the Box Canyon Road corridor, which is why wildlife concentrates there. The night sky at camp — Camp sits in a walled wash with no streetlight for miles and no town in the direction you are facing, which is a rarer thing than it sounds two and a half hours from the coast. The canyon walls cut off half the sky and frame the rest. On Saturday October 24, 2026 the moon is a 97% waxing gibbous (full moon is the next night) that rises at 4:58 p.m. — before sunset — so it will be a bright, not a dark-sky, night: good for finding your way around camp, less good for the Milky Way. Plan your visit

Getting there

From	Route & time	Miles
Huntington Beach and the LA/OC area	East on CA-91 through Riverside, then I-10 east (or CA-60 to I-10) over the pass past Palm Springs to Indio. From Indio take CA-86 or CA-111 south through Coachella to Mecca, turn east on 66th Avenue, which becomes Box Canyon Road, and watch for Painted Canyon Road on the left. Roughly 2½ to 3 hours in normal traffic — that figure is approximate, since no official source publishes a drive time; BLM gives the one hard number, 15 miles southeast of Indio.
The back way from I-10	BLM's other listed approach: leave I-10 at Cottonwood Springs Road near Chiriaco Summit, by Joshua Tree's south entrance, and take Box Canyon Road southwest through the Mecca Hills to Painted Canyon Road. Paved, two lanes, and a far better drive than the valley route — but it adds time from the coast. Save it for the way home.
The last four miles	Painted Canyon Road runs north off Box Canyon Road for about four miles of dirt to the parking area at the end. BLM calls it four-wheel-drive access. The first couple of miles cross tribal land before reaching BLM ground, so camp in the upper part of the road near the trailhead.

Getting around

Everything here is reached by car from camp, and the canyons are walked from the parking area at the end of Painted Canyon Road. Inside the wilderness there are no vehicles and no bicycles — BLM prohibits motor vehicles, off-highway vehicles, bicycles, carts and aircraft landings on all designated wilderness. Through October 29, 2026 the seasonal fire order separately bans motor vehicles off established roads and trails across the whole district. Stay on the roadbed, park on firm ground, and walk from there.

There are no trail signs, no junction markers and no maintained tread. BLM says it directly: no designated trails. Download an offline map before you leave the highway.

Entrance fees & passes

Nothing to pay. BLM lists fees as N/A for Mecca Hills Wilderness — there is no entrance station, no day-use fee and no camping fee, and nothing to reserve.

The neighbors do charge. Joshua Tree National Park is $30 per private vehicle for 7 days ($25 motorcycle, $15 per person on foot or bike, free under 16, $55 for the park annual pass), and entrance stations take card only. Salton Sea State Recreation Area day use is $7 per vehicle, $5 for seniors 62 and over. Coachella Valley Preserve is free.

Reservations & timed entry

None, and none possible. There is no campground, no reservation system and no designated site anywhere on Painted Canyon Road. Camping is first come, first served in the pull-outs along the road, and busy weekends fill the good spots by late afternoon. If you want something you can book, Salton Sea State Recreation Area is about half an hour away.

Fuel, food, water, cell

There is nothing out here. No water, no store, no fuel, no ranger station and no visitor center anywhere in the wilderness or on Painted Canyon Road. BLM lists no facilities for the unit and tells visitors to bring their own water.

Fill the tank and buy every scrap of food, ice and water in Coachella or Indio, 15 to 25 minutes back up the highway, where the full supermarkets are. Mecca itself is a small town with limited services — treat it as a last-chance top-up, not a plan.

The nearest staffed public building to camp is the Salton Sea State Recreation Area visitor center, open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily with restrooms. For road and fire status, call the BLM Palm Springs–South Coast Field Office at 760-833-7100; the public room is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.

How to book

Nothing to book and nothing to pay. BLM lists fees as N/A for Mecca Hills Wilderness and publishes no campground, no designated sites and no reservation system here — you drive in, find an unoccupied pull-out and stop. BLM's general rule for dispersed camping applies: up to 14 days in any 28-day period, camp within 150 feet of the designated route, use ground that is already disturbed, make no new tracks, and pack everything out.

Two practical catches. First, the first couple of miles of Painted Canyon Road cross tribal land before reaching BLM ground, so carry on up the road before setting up. Second, the good spots go by late afternoon on a nice weekend — arrive with daylight to spare so you can scout a pull-out on foot before driving into it.

How to book

California State Parks campgrounds are booked through ReserveCalifornia. State Parks lists tent sites at $20, hookup sites at $30, primitive sites at $10 and group sites at $75 per night, with $2 off per night for seniors, plus a $7 per vehicle day-use fee. Note the current closures: Mecca Beach Campground is closed for maintenance and Bombay Beach Campground is closed, and Varner Harbor is closed to vessel access until further notice as the water drops. The visitor center is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily except Thanksgiving and Christmas.

The nearest full-service town: supermarkets, fuel, and the widest choice of chain and independent motels in the east valley. It is also where you turn south for Mecca, so it costs nothing to detour through.

Heat, and the one-liter floor

BLM's alert for this exact area: bring at least one liter per person plus electrolytes, start early because temperatures rise quickly by early afternoon, hike with a buddy, and tell someone when you expect back. One liter is the floor for a short walk, not a plan. Mid-October normals at nearby Thermal are 90°F by day; June through August run 103–107°F. There is no shade in the washes and no water anywhere in the wilderness.

Flash floods in the slots

A slot canyon is a drain. Rain falling miles away and out of sight can fill it, and the same water takes out the road behind you — a 2018 storm destroyed Box Canyon Road and it took a $3 million repair to reopen in May 2019. The rule is simple: if rain is anywhere in the forecast for the region, do not enter the narrow canyons and do not drive in. Painted Canyon Road closes after rain.

The ladders are not maintained

Nobody official owns the ladders. BLM does not list them, inspect them or vouch for them, and hikers report that a rung or two is sometimes missing and that the tallest is around twelve to fifteen feet. Test each one with your weight before you commit, send the strongest person first and last, and spot children. If a ladder looks wrong, turn around — Big Painted Canyon is a full outing on its own with no ladders in it.

Getting lost in the maze

BLM describes Mecca Hills as a badlands labyrinth, a natural maze of small, narrow, steep canyons, and states flatly that there are no designated trails. Side canyons look like the main canyon. Download an offline map before you leave the highway, keep the group together at every junction, and note where you entered the slot from the wash — that junction is easy to miss on the way back.

No cell service, no quick help

BLM: this area has little to no cell service. Coverage varies by carrier near the road entrance and disappears in the canyons. Nobody is coming quickly. Tell someone at home your plan and your return time, carry a first-aid kit and more water than you think, and agree on a meeting place and time with your group rather than assuming you can text.

Soft sand and the drive in

BLM describes Painted Canyon Road as four-wheel-drive access. In dry conditions ordinary cars regularly make the graded stretches, but the failure mode is sand, not slope: keep momentum, do not stop in a soft patch, and scout every pull-out on foot before driving into it. Carry a shovel and traction boards if you have them. If in doubt, park where the ground is firm and ride the last stretch with someone else.

Fires and the campfire permit

BLM's seasonal fire restrictions for the California Desert District are scheduled through October 29, 2026, and BLM has lifted them early in past years; while they are on, wood fires belong in approved fire pits. Anyone running a campfire, barbecue or gas stove on BLM land needs a free California Campfire Permit, and fires are off during a Red Flag Warning.

Cold, wind and the overnight swing

The valley swings about 34°F between afternoon and dawn in October — 90°F down to 57°F — and December and January dawns run near 38°F. Campers also report that the wind picks up hard in the wash at night, so stake tents properly and weight anything light. It is not dangerous cold, but it is the difference between a good night and a long one.

Do I need a permit or a pass?

Not to hike or camp. BLM lists fees as N/A for Mecca Hills Wilderness — no entrance station, no day-use fee, no camping fee. The one piece of paperwork is a free California Campfire Permit, which is required year-round for any campfire, barbecue or gas stove on BLM land outside a developed campground. It takes a few minutes online and covers your calendar year.

Can I drive a normal car to the trailhead?

BLM describes Painted Canyon Road as four-wheel-drive access, and that is the official line. In practice, in dry weather, plenty of ordinary cars drive the graded stretches — the danger is soft sand rather than rocks or steepness. Keep moving through sandy patches, do not stop in them, scout pull-outs on foot, and after rain do not attempt it at all. If you are unsure, park where the ground is firm and ride in with someone else.

Is there a bathroom, or water?

No water — bring all of it. There is no store, no spigot and no ranger station anywhere in the wilderness. Toilets are covered: there are public pit toilets about a quarter mile east of our spot at 33.61268, -116.00746 (Google Maps · Apple Maps), and Aaron brings a bucket toilet with a privacy tent for camp. Pack out all trash.

How hard is Ladder Canyon, really?

Moderate. It is roughly 4.5 to 5 miles with about 600 feet of climbing, on sand, with several ladders — the tallest around twelve to fifteen feet — and a few scrambles. Fit kids who like climbing love it; anyone very afraid of heights or tight spaces will not. The no-ladders version is walking up Big Painted Canyon and back, which is genuinely easy and just as colorful.

When should I go?

October through April. Nearby Thermal averages 90°F in October, drops to 79°F in November and 69–74°F in midwinter, then climbs back through the 80s and 90s in spring. June through August averages 103 to 107°F with no shade and no water — that is not a hiking season, it is a hazard. Winter brings the most rain, which is the other thing to watch here.

Can I bring my dog?

On BLM land, yes — but think about the route. Getting a dog up and down ladders and dry falls is hard and can be dangerous, the rock is sharp on paws, and there is no water. Big Painted Canyon is the reasonable dog walk. Note that Coachella Valley Preserve bans pets entirely apart from service dogs, so do not plan both in one day.

What is Chuckwalla National Monument, and does it change anything?

In January 2025 the Mecca Hills Wilderness was included in the new Chuckwalla National Monument, about 624,270 acres of BLM land holding five wilderness areas. For a visitor nothing has changed: same field office, same rules, still no fee. The monument is being challenged in court — in March 2026 conservation groups and Tribal Nations were allowed to join the case to defend it — but access today is unaffected.
